GLASS REPLACEMENT
Insulated Glass Units (IGUs) are double or triple-pane windows designed to provide superior thermal performance and energy efficiency. Unlike single-pane glass, IGUs consist of two or more glass panes separated by a spacer and sealed together, creating an insulating air or gas-filled gap. This design helps reduce heat transfer, maintain indoor comfort, and minimize energy costs by acting as a barrier between your home and the outside environment. When an IGU is damaged, it compromises the seal, reducing the window’s insulating properties and often causing condensation, fogging, or visible distortion within the panes.
When replacing an IGU, it is essential to replace the entire unit rather than just the damaged pane. The reason for this is that the panes are sealed together as a single unit, and breaking that seal to replace just one pane would eliminate the insulating properties. Additionally, a broken or cracked pane often results in a loss of gas fill (such as argon), which diminishes the window's energy efficiency. By replacing the entire IGU, we ensure that the window retains its insulating capabilities, restoring both performance and clarity.
Modern IGUs often include Low-E (low-emissivity) coatings, which are designed to reflect infrared heat while allowing visible light to pass through. This special coating significantly improves energy efficiency by keeping heat inside during the winter and outside during the summer. However, over time, the Low-E coating can fail, leading to a hazy or discolored appearance on the glass. This cloudiness or "rainbow effect" is a clear sign that the Low-E coating has degraded, reducing the window’s efficiency and clarity.
Replacing damaged or outdated IGUs with new Low-E glass is an excellent investment for improving your home’s energy efficiency. Low-E glass reduces heat transfer, lowers utility bills, and enhances indoor comfort by keeping your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Upgrading your windows with high-performance IGUs not only restores the aesthetic appeal of clear, bright glass but also helps protect your home’s interior from harmful UV rays, reducing fading of furniture and flooring.
